Tips on How to Care for a Cat

If you are at this site then you are probably looking for tips on how to care for your cat. Or maybe your looking for ideas on how to care for a kitten. Well I'm here to give you some tips on how to care for your cat, such as what materials you'll need, how to keep your cat healthy, and how to make sure your cat doesn't suffer with flea or ear mites. These are all tips that I will give you on how to care for your cat or new kitten.

First off, I will talk to you about basic things you need to have and do to take good care of your cat. You should have a food and water dish so that your cat can have a place to eat and drink. You can put this anywhere in the house as long as your cat knows where it is and can get to it easily. If you ever decide to change the place where you feed your cat be sure to show your cat so he or she knows the new place.

If your cat will be an inside cat then you should have a litter box. Your cat will need a place to do their business. Most people put the litter box in the bathroom, but it can go anywhere in the house.

If you are planning on having a partly outside cat then you probably don't need a litter box at all because your cat can just do their business outside. However, if they can't go out freely you may want a litter box just to make sure there are no accidents.

One of the top things on your list of how to care for your cat is having items around that will make life more comfortable for both you and your cat. What I am talking about is a scratching post and some toys. A scratching post is a small piece of furniture that the cat can use for scratching their claws on. Most have a post on them anywhere from 10" tall and up with cloth over it. They can sharpen their claws and even climb around on it.

What you don't want is a scratching post made with carpet. The reason being that this will teach the cat to scratch on your carpet.

Of course, toys are just for fun and will keep your kitty entertained and happy. Yarn, string, feather wand or just something as simple as a toy mouse to bat around and chase are simple toys that they will love.

Do You Know How to Care for a Cat Hairballs?
Sometimes you run into cat problems such as those nasty hairballs! You may have heard that cats get hairballs, but do you really know what they are?

Yes, I'll tell you...

Hairballs are things that your cat will cough up. It is mostly fur, saliva, and some digested food. Sounds gross, right?

Yea, it's kind of gross, but actually it is very natural. The reason your cat gets hairballs is because they lick their fur to clean themselves and they swallow some of the excess fur. This makes a build up in the cats stomach until the hairball gets so big, then it triggers the cat to throw it up. So out comes the hairball.

Of course there are ways to prevent hairballs. The easiest way is to brush your cat's fur regularly. This will not completely get rid of the hairballs, but they will happen less frequently.

Another way to stop hairballs is to give your cat special cat food that will make the hairballs go through the digestive system. You can find this food at your local pet store.

A similar remedy for hairballs is to get a special gel which you can put on the cats food or you can put it on their fur which the cat will lick and swallow. This gel will do almost the same thing as the special food above.

So if you don't like hairballs you can try any one of these methods.

Concerns About Food, Fleas and Ear Mites
The type of cat food you feed your cat is especially important on how to care for your cat. Many people think that it is okay to give your dog cat food, and vise versa, you cat dog food. But there is a very important reason why you don't want to do this!

Dogs are part omnivorous so dog food has more grains and plants in it than cat food. Cats are mostly carnivorous so their cat food is made of mostly meat. So if your cat happens to eat dog food he is not getting the right nutrition by a long shot. Same goes for your dog. The right nutrition is so important because it keeps your cat health and feeling great.

One of the most talked about concerns among cat owners is how to care for a cat's fleas. Fleas will make your cat very unhappy, and also can give your cat tape worms. Not only will fleas make your cat unhappy, but you won't be trilled to find them eating on your either!

You can keep your cat free of fleas in a number of ways, such as liquids, powders, or any flea treatment. However, getting rid of fleas takes time and you need to be patient. The fastest and best flea remedy our family has found is Advantage. Some flea products work better than others.

Some things you can do:

  • You should clean out your cat's bed once a week.

  • You should vacuum regularly, to make sure fleas don't live in your carpet.

  • You should give your cat flea medicine regularly. They can get fleas just about anywhere outside, so make sure you are keeping track of when your cat needs flea medicine.

If you do everything I just recommended then your cat will most likely not have fleas, but if they do, then they should be dying shortly from the methods you have used above.

Another important thing on how to care for your cat is watching out for a little bug called ear mites. They live in your cats ears, such as the name implies. They will make your cat scratch at their ears. These bugs are kind of like fleas in their ears. They will bite the inside of the ear and drink the blood. This is why it makes your cat's ears itch, because your cat only feels a little tickle, and of course they want it to go away.

Some of the most common ways to keep your cat free of ear mites is to clean out their ears once a week, or use special ear drops for your cat that you can get at a local pet shop. You may want to try a home remedy that we use if you see the ear mites; baby oil and Q-tips. Ear mites are very uncomfortable for your cat so be sure to take special care when cleaning the ears.

Your cat may become very irritable and uncomfortable if you don't keep them free of those nasty ear mites.

In conclusion, I hope now that you have read all the ways on how to care for a cat, that your cat will be more healthy and cared for. Keep your cat free of fleas and ear mites, tips on dealing with hairballs, having the right food and supplies at home; all of these things will keep your cat happy and purring with love.
